Subject: The situation of 'mule women' and the Schengen evaluation report
In 2017, four women working as porters were crushed to death in a stampede at the El Tarajal border crossing between Ceuta and Morocco. Two other women lost their lives on 15 January 2018 with the same cause of death.
The answer to question E-004111/2017 on the situation of female porters states that ‘Article 31 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union provides that every worker has the right to fair and just working conditions which respect his or her health, safety and dignity’, and that Member States are responsible for assessing cases.
The answer also mentions that the Commission will adopt the report in accordance with the procedure provided by the Schengen evaluation Regulation, following the ‘announced Schengen evaluation visit in September 2017 to the Spanish external borders, including Ceuta,’ during which ‘the application by Spain of the Schengen acquis was verified’.
What measures is the Commission going to take to address the situation of non-compliance with Article 31 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU by the Spanish Government, in relation to female porters at the border crossing between Ceuta and Morocco?
When is the Schengen evaluation report, which the Commission agreed to adopt, going to finally be submitted?
