Megafarms in Aragón (Spain)

Florent Marcellesi (auteur)

Question for written answer E-001261/2018 to the Commission Rule 130 Florent Marcellesi (Verts/ALE) Subject: Megafarms in Aragón (Spain) Between 1 January 2017 and 5 February 2018, the regional government of Aragón (Spain) granted licences for the operation of 45 megafarms, for the raising of cattle, sheep, poultry and pigs (source: Official Journal of Aragon). The vast majority are located in special protection areas (SPAs) or sites of Community importance (SCIs) protected by the Natura 2000 network. This is in breach of the provisions of Directives 92/43/EEC and 85/337/EEC, on environmental protection, and 75/442/EEC on pig farms, among other EU rules. (1) Is the Commission aware that these 45 licences have been granted for megafarms in areas protected by the Natura 2000 network? (2) What measures does the Commission intend to take to enforce the directives which the government of Aragón is guilty of breaching? (3) Does the Commission believe the exponential growth of megafarms to be compatible with the reform of the CAP to ensure greater sustainability and animal welfare?
