Subject: Miengo wastewater treatment plant
The regional government of Cantabria (Spain) plans to locate a wastewater treatment plant in the Cuchía wetlands (Miengo municipality, Cantabria), an area of great environmental importance. Within the Costa Quebrada natural park, an underwater sewage outlet on Usgo beach poses a risk of possible discharges and minor leaks causing irreversible degradation to the area, as well as the additional economic cost.
The plan would infringe European legislation on the protection of bird life by altering maritime-terrestrial ecosystems, and dredging would impact a protection zone for aquatic species.
(1) Is the Commission aware that the construction of this wastewater treatment plant is in violation of Annex I to Directive 2009/147/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on protection of birds?
(2) Is the Commission aware that this construction is also in violation of Directive 2006/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, Directive 2008/56/EC of 17 June 2008 and Annexes II and IV to Directive 92/43/EEC on habitats?
(3) What measures does the Commission intend to take in this regard?
