on behalf of the Renew Group. – Madam President, our single market remains fragmented and national gold-plating is one of the main causes.
Let's call it as it is: governments cannot blame Brussels bureaucracy while creating more bureaucracy themselves at home. They cannot demand simplification in Europe and then transform one European rule into 27 different national regimes, adding obligations, procedures and paperwork. That is political hypocrisy and our small and medium businesses pay the price.
Simplify, yes. Remove duplication and unnecessary reporting, yes. But simplification must not mean weaker protection for businesses and consumers. So stop gold-plating, implement what we decide together faithfully, on time and without national bureaucratic extras, and enforce it equally everywhere.
The single market was created to eliminate national barriers, not to allow governments to rebuild them through bureaucracy. One market, common rules, no national gold-plating, that is the simplification Europe needs.
